What's Happening in the Vail Valley this Holiday Season

From the opening of ski resorts to New Year's Eve celebrations, there is no better place to spend the holidays than in the Vail Valley, a hub for Colorado activities. To celebrate, we put together a list of upcoming events we’re looking forward to this holiday season in Vail, Beaver Creek and the surrounding area. 

Nov. 17, 2017

Vail Ski Resort Opening Day will take place on Friday, Nov. 17. Opening Day is always a fun celebration, with people coming from around Colorado in anticipation of a great ski season ahead.

Epic ski passes for the 2017-18 season, which give access to many local resorts, are on sale until Nov. 19, 2017

Nov. 22, 2017

Beaver Creek Resort will open for the ski season on Wed., Nov. 22, the day before Thanksgiving. Get to Beaver Creek early for first tracks — the lifts will start running at 9 a.m. At 2 p.m., make sure you attend the 14th Annual World’s Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Competition.

It is expected that 5,000 cookies will be consumed in around 20 minutes, with the winner being crowned the 2017-18 Official Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe of Beaver Creek. 

Nov. 23, 2017 (Thanksgiving Day)

Before tucking into your Thanksgiving feast, work on your fitness at Dogma Athletica in Edwards, Colo. The fitness studio will be hosting two holiday-themed events on Thanksgiving morning: Fit Before the Feast (bring your own pumpkin) and Grateful Flow, a donation-based yoga class featuring a Grateful Dead playlist. 

Nov. 24, 2017

Part of opening week celebrations at Beaver Creek, the 36th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place on at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 24.

Santa Claus and his elves be in attendance, and there will be a free fireworks show at 6:30 p.m. over Beaver Creek Village. 

Nov. 25, 2017

Celebrate Vail Valley local businesses — and finish up your holiday shopping — during Small Business Saturday. This event helps our community’s economy and allows you to meet local small business owners. 

Nov. 30 - Dec. 3

Watch the world’s best downhill skiers race in Beaver Creek at the Birds of Prey Men’s World Cup Races. The ski event will be supplemented by other festivities, including ice skating, live music, U.S. Ski Team Athlete Signing, raffles and more. And, grab your vintage one-piece ski suit: license partner Josh Lautenberg’s ‘80s cover band, Rewind, will be playing a free show at the Ski Welcome Party With Ted Ligety.

Warren Miller’s Line of Descent, the family-friendly ski movie of the year, will be shown at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek on Dec. 1 and Dec. 2. Between Dec. 1 and Dec. 3, check out the Artists’ Holiday Market at the Alpine Arts Center in Edwards. There will be over 25 featured artists, as well as a fondue party and kids crafts.

Dec. 8 - Dec. 10

If you’re in the Minturn area on Dec. 9, go Home for the Holidays with free entrance to the Gypsum Recreation Center, a community tree lighting, visit with Santa Claus, chili cook-off and holiday lighting contest. We also love Vail Snowdays, a three-day winter celebration in Vail Village between Dec. 8 and Dec. 10. Come for mountaintop yoga, free live music on Saturday, aprés-ski parties and more.  

Dec. 14, 2017

Bring kids of all ages to the Vail Public Library between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. for the Children’s Holiday Program. Expect crafts and caroling galore — and a visit from Santa! 

Dec. 15 - Dec. 17

Vail Friends of Dance, a local nonprofit, presents The Nutcracker Ballet at the Beaver Creek Vilar Performing Arts Center.

Tickets are $38 for each of the four performances, which are likely to sell out quickly. Don’t miss the Ballerina Bake Sale and Boutique!

Dec. 31, 2017

Ring in 2018 with classic Vail Valley events and celebrations. In Vail, watch the torchlight parade at Golden Peak at 6:15 p.m., followed by community fireworks at dusk.

In Beaver Creek, there will be a glowstick ski run, torchlight parade and fireworks, followed by the New Years Eve Family Bash, with a DJ, games and more. The Family Bash requires tickets, but the other events are free to the public.
